There’s no secret that as a nation, Australians are a sun loving lot; and with the wide open spaces, active lifestyles, fantastic climate and a land that’s girt by sea why wouldn’t we be? The down side, of course, is that the sun’s rays can damage and age our skin.
As little as eleven minutes unprotected exposure to direct sunlight can result in permanent changes or damage to the skin. With the spectrum of possible negative effects running from the immediate danger of sunburn through to ongoing photo-ageing (age spots, wrinkles, ‘leathery’ skin) and perhaps most frightening of all, the formation of skin cancers in the long term; being ‘sun smart’ is something we should all do automatically.
The classic message of ‘slip, slop, slap’ has in recent years been expanded to include ‘seek and slide’; in full it’s ‘slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses’.
Naturally we believe that the sunscreen of choice should be Modere Sunscreen!
Modere Sunscreen offers a host of benefits:
- SPF 50+ protection against UV-A and UV-B rays
- Safe to use on the face and sensitive skin – formulated for the whole family
- Water resistant
- Active ingredient zinc oxide provides a physical barrier
- No nanotechnology
- Rich in antioxidants, moisturisers and minerals to fight skin ageing
- Hydrating cream base disappears after application, leaving your skin soft,
smooth, and protected - 3 year shelf life when stored below 30oC
For maximum protection, Modere Sunscreen (like all sunscreens) should be applied to clean, dry skin no less than 15 – 20 minutes before going outdoors and should be reapplied at least every two hours (more often after swimming, heavy perspiration or towel drying).
The amount of sunscreen you apply is also important. Research shows many Australians use less than half of the recommended amount. International guidelines recommend that 2mg per square centimetre of exposed skin be used – for the average Australian that works out that if you’re wearing a hat, tee shirt and shorts, you’d need to apply about three teaspoons to the exposed areas for full protection.
Sunscreens are designed to protect you for the time you spend in the sun and you should be wary about spending additional time in the sun. The wise advice of wherever practicable not exposing yourself to the direct sun between 10am and 2pm (11am to 3pm during daylight-saving time) is also worth bearing in mind. Modere also recommend that is important to wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear whenever exposing yourself to sunlight for extended periods.
